Well, first of all you need to kind of know the notes and be able to have your brain quickly translate the music to what keys should be played. I've found that flashcards are very helpful. Quiz yourself until you know them all, and can identify them quickly. Then try playing, and you should find it easier.
References :
If you are considering learning the piano there are many ways to go about practicing. Many people are considering online lessons as a way of learning the skills and techniques they require to be in a band or to play along others. There is no doubt that piano is a necessary requirement for anyone wishing to be in a band and learning online can be interesting and fun. Having the ability to continually go over troubling issues makes this form of learning suitable for any budding musicians. It may not be right for you but there is only one way to find out.

Actually, I don't think the Alfred course is the best one out there. I was taught with the Alfred, and now I'm teaching my younger sister using John Thompson, and I think the John Thompson is better. The first book you are mostly playing pieces that he wrote himself for the book, but in the second book you start to get adaptations of classical pieces. My sister is currently working on a simplified version of the Hallelujah chorus. There isn't a CD available to my knowledge, but I consider the books to be well worth getting.

And yes, get a teacher. You will avoid a lot of bad habits in your technique if you have a good teacher.
References :
Which had do you play the chords with?
What do you do with the other hand?

Those are questions that you would ask about a particular musical STYLE. In general, there are no rules about what you do with your hands at the piano. You just do whatever sounds right.

If you have a good music store in you area, you probably can find books that will teach techniques and exercises to help you improvise in a specific style or play lead sheets in a specific style. Even if you don't know yet what style is right for you, spending some time with a book like that can help you figure it out. And meanwhile, even if you haven't figured out what kind of music "does it for you," practicing ANY kind of music will help you out.

I myself walked into a big music store and asked, "do you have any books to teach rock piano techniques or blues piano techniques?" Almost the entire store was devoted to scores for specific classical piano and orchestral works, but the clerk lead me directly to a shelf that had a dozen or more books that fit exactly what I was asking for.

Personally, I would prefer to play a bass line with my left hand, chords with my right, and (ideally) somebody ELSE would sing the melody.
References :
This question gets asked ten times a day, so I've written a series of articles on this.

First, find a teacher. http://www.ehow.com/how_4535012_select-childs-music-teacher.html

Second, get the most from your music lessons. http://www.ehow.com/how_4535829_music-lessons.html

Third, practice the right way. http://www.ehow.com/how_4537458_practice-music-efficiently.html

As for books I recommend Bartok's First Term at the Piano as a starter, along with the scales and technical exercises (Hanon is a good choice but discuss RSI with your teacher first).
References :
M.M., teacher for over twenty years, now in D/FW.

If you're a beginner pianist, you most likely won't be playing classical music—at first. However, you can begin developing a technique and acquire facility to play simple classical pieces in short order, with the right instruction.

I recommend Alfred lesson books.

I also very strongly recommend that you consult your newspaper, local web ads, local musicians, or other available resources to find a quality piano teacher in your area, because tere's much more to learning the piano than can be got from a book and a CD. : D

Good luck.
References :
classically trained pianist
